How to pack a kindergarten backpack properly

The time has come: the first day of preschool is fast approaching. I’ve bought the preschool backpack and everything else that will be needed at preschool. But how do I fit all these things into the new backpack?

What should go in a kindergarten backpack?

Items your child needs every day can stay at preschool. Others must be brought in every day. In most preschools, each child has a locker where they can store items such as a change of clothes. In case your child gets dirty while painting with finger paint or playing outside, a change of clothes is absolutely necessary. Slippers can also stay at preschool. Rain gear (rubber boots, rain pants, and a rain jacket) can also be kept at preschool so your child can play outside even when it rains. Your kindergarten backpack packing list, on the other hand, should include the items your child needs to bring every day. An ideal kindergarten backpack features various compartments that allow for better organization of the backpack’s contents. The lunchbox should be placed in the main compartment. Ideally, the water bottle should also fit here. Alternatively, it can be stored in the side outer compartment, but placing it in the main compartment prevents one-sided strain and uneven weight distribution. The inner compartment of the backpack can hold small items like tissues. A kindergarten backpack with a slightly larger capacity can also accommodate a favorite stuffed animal or comfort blanket. If your kindergarten has a “toy day,” your child can also pack their favorite toy in the backpack. Either the main compartment or an outer compartment is suitable for this.

What should you keep in mind when packing your backpack?

It’s especially important to pack a larger-capacity preschool backpack so that it’s not too heavy. Your child should be able to put on, take off, and carry their backpack on their own. As a general rule, your child should never carry more than 10% of their own body weight! Also, make sure to distribute the weight as evenly as possible. Place heavy items in the main compartment of the backpack, as low as possible and close to your back. Lighter items can be stored in the outer compartment. It is especially important to ensure an even distribution of weight on both sides when using the side pockets.

Checklist for properly packing a kindergarten backpack

  • Have you packed everything you'll need for the day? For example, a lunchbox, water bottle, and other items?
  • Isn't the backpack too heavy? Rule of thumb: max. 10% of body weight
  • Is there only a small, similar weight in the outer pockets?
  • Are heavy items stored close to the floor? Now your child can comfortably and safely carry their perfectly packed preschool backpack all the way to preschool and on to new adventures on their big day.
